Katarina Witt first began to skate at the age 5 years. She was only five when her abilities became apparent and then in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered an institution specifically designed for children with sporting talents. It was here that she was introduced to their coach Jutta Muller. Witt became a star in 1982, when she was second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught the attention of everyone immediately, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the competition. Olympic success Katarina Wit was awarded gold medals in women's ice skating during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after an intensely competitive contest. After four years, her win, she managed to claim an additional competitive race. Although she lost in the free-skating contest, gold was awarded for her performance on the compulsory figures as well as the short program. Witt was the only woman after Sonja Haenie to win a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actress. The team finished seventh, but she wowed the crowd despite not winning a medal. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
